Character Personality:
Peregrine is every bit a Took: he has that adventurous streak that some rare hobbits in his family have, an inability to keep his nose to himself and out of trouble, and a lot of cheer and mischief to boot. He is endlessly curious and while he is not exactly stupid-- give him a riddle or a problem to solve that requires a clever solution, and he’s a good hobbit to have around-- he is very spontaneous and sadly not at all practiced at thinking things through and reasoning out their consequences. This gets him into a lot of trouble, in fact. It’s what sent him off with Frodo on the quest to destroy the Ring, it’s what got him taken away by orcs when the Fellowship broke apart, it’s what got him enlisted in Gondor when he met the Steward... it’s responsible for a lot of his follies, really.

At the same time, while he can be a bit silly in his actions and comments, he is also rather noble of intent. His determination to follow Frodo and help in his quest was out of loyalty and love; when he was kidnapped by orcs he was trying to protect his friends by catching the attention of their enemies; and when he got stuck under the Warder’s thumb, it was out of an excess of guilt, grief, and high-minded intent. He’s the kind of hobbit who, when hearing a friend coughing from too much smoke, quietly brings him a cup of water.

In some ways, Pippin lacks confidence in himself, though he’s come a long way from the self-deprecating youth who originally left the Shire with Frodo and the others. His adventure with the others in the lands of Middle Earth did force him to mature a little, but he still tends to think he’s not worth much. He’s always been something of a follower who depends on others for direction and help, always following his best friend Meriadoc, or Frodo, or Gandalf, or anyone else who might have a better idea of what to do than he does. At first it was mostly habit and inexperience, later a lack of confidence and a sense of being overwhelmed by the events that transpired. He’s perfectly capable of making important decisions on his own, but it almost always occurs when no one else can see him, there’s no one else to make the choice, or the decision is to find someone else to take action for him. This tendency also makes a handy excuse for when things go wrong: it wasn’t his fault!

He’s emotional and doesn’t bother to hide it, in part due to nature, in part due to youth, and in part due to his culture, which is more affectionate and open. There’s nothing wrong with being moved to tears or hugging on your friends, to a hobbit, especially a hobbit like Pippin. He is also brave when he doesn’t have time to think about it, usually also out of excess of emotion: luring orcs to chase him, attacking a mountain troll when he fear it killed Frodo, pestering his orc captors when he feared Merry was hurt, and rescuing Faramir from the middle of a burning pyre. He’s even killed an orc or two in his time... though he’d really rather not think about that too much. Tell stories about it, sure, but not examine the whole “terrified” part of the memory too closely.

AU Information:
Pippin spent two weeks in another world that was not his own before being pulled into Saeng Seong. That two weeks was spent in the Observatory on the world of Citagazze, and half of that time was spent miserably recovering from having part of his soul forced out of his body and into a furry little hopping thing that talked, while the other half was spent dodging soldiers attacking the Observatory and then skulking around being nervous while those soldiers tried to reorganize the place. It was something of a relief to get to leave (mostly because the game in question, Distant Skies, closed on him so shortly after his arrival...).

There are really only two major changes that come from that time. First, that he is now aware of-- and ridiculously curious about-- the possibility of other worlds. Lots of other worlds. Saeng Seong will be a surprise to him, but a terror, and he’ll be happy to question people all about theirs. He’ll also be a little less worried about getting back to his own proper world, since obviously this world-hopping thing is a thing and he should just enjoy it while he can, right? He is going to be kind of looking for the catch, though, where things might explode on him here like it did in the Observatory.

The second change is even more obvious, for everyone who wound up on Citagazze wound up there with a daemon. Pippin now has a fluffy Tamar wallaby named Jaeding as a constant companion: half his soul that is unable to move too far from him without pain, cannot be comfortably touched by another person, and tied to him for life. She is rather like he is, being curious and adventurous and playful and maybe a little less than sure of herself, and though she’s rather new to him, he thinks he likes her. Of course, no one has actually had the chance to tell him what kind of animal she is, and Pippin has never been to the Middle Earth equivalent of Australia, so he tends to go with “magic rabbit”, which amuses her sometimes and annoys her sometimes.

Character Abilities:
Eating, drinking, cooking, gardening, smoking... what else are hobbits good for, really? He has a penchant for pranks and stories and, through an adventure he’s happy to tell anyone about at any time, some skill at arms with a (very) short sword. When throwing things (mostly rocks) he has quite good aim, but doesn’t do much damage, and he’s pretty good at not being seen when he wants to hide. He has a lovely singing voice, and can even ride a horse, with some help from a man or a wizard!

Because he has a daemon, he has a few other slight abilities. Jaeding, being an animal, has slightly better senses than he does, particularly hearing and scent. She cannot be touched without discomfort, except with warning and by someone they both trust. Being a separate physical being from him, she can also look around corners and behind him, to see things he can't. Also, being a wallaby, she has a pouch where she likes to hide things that she can then reveal again later, when it’s most interesting or funny.

Character Inventory:
=His clothes (short trousers, tunic, suspenders, waistcoat, coat, hat, and elven cloak)
=One (very) short sword
=One (extremely tiny) dagger
=A pipe with a packet of smokeleaf

Samples:

The Green Dragon was a cheerful spot of light amidst the smaller lights of Hobbiton. Pippin scampered inside, not on Merry’s heels for once but leading the way. Mostly because he was hankering for some of the good brew inside, and more full of energy than usual, but still. He bounced up to the bar, grinned a cheeky grin at the barmaid-- not Rosie, of course, or Samwise would likely hit him-- to ask, “A bit of the dark ale for me and my friend, then?”

A moment later and with a wink and gracious thanks to said barmaid, he skipped back to the table Merry had chosen with the drinks in one hand and a basket of fried fish and chips in the other, just to munch on. He plopped himself down and set one mug in front of his friend and the other in front of himself. “One for you and one for me! Ah, I miss pints. Why doesn’t it come in pints here?”

“You don’t need any pints,” Merry told him, mock-sternly. “You drink enough as it is.”

Pippin replied by sticking out his tongue at his friend, and popping a chip in his mouth. They did wind up having several rounds, and true to Merry’s word, they both wound up drinking more than they probably ought, but since when did a hobbit care about that? After a rousing couple of songs and an attempt to regale the tavern with their exploits during the war, Rosie herself finally shooed them out to cool off.

“She’s really getting boring, now that Sam’s taking her out,” Merry complained, arm around Pippin’s shoulder, and Pippin only made a noise of cheerful agreement, staring up at the stars. They looked far away, with all the light around to make them seem dim. Merry followed his gaze, and sighed. “It’s good to be home, eh, Pip?”

“That 'tis,” Pippin agreed, looking wistful. He loved the Shire. It was nice and quiet and peaceful here. After a year or two of it, in fact, it was almost too peaceful. “Wouldn’t mind another adventure, though.”

“What? Don’t talk crazy. I’ve had my fill of adventures,” Merry snorted, and started them weaving back towards home.

Pippin didn’t bother to contradict him, he just said, “Well. Maybe one with a little less death and destruction next time.” Merry just laughed at him.
